3 reasons to have an indoor grow space

There are several great reasons for growing indoors.

These include…

  1. Growing microgreens to add nutrients to your meals
  2. Growing vegetables and herbs all year ’round so you can have them whenever you want
  3. Starting your garden plants early so they get a head start while it’s still cold outside.

Microgreens

Microgreens provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals, and they are easy to grow.

They are quick and easy because you are sprouting the seeds and harvesting the short sprouts 7-10 days.

Here are some of the best to grow…

  • Broccoli
  • Radish
  • Arugula
  • Kale
  • Sunflower
  • Pea
  • Beet
  • Spinach
  • Mustard

You can read about these microgreens and their nutritional content here.

Fully grown vegetables

In our area, the outdoor growing season is from May – Sept (and into October for vegetables like Brussels Sprouts and Broccoli).

But you can eat fresh, nutritious, clean salads all year long if you set up your indoor grow space the right way.

Here are some of the easiest things to grow:

  • Lettuce (many varieties)
  • Tomatoes (dwarf varieties)
  • Radishes
  • Onions (scallion types)

Getting a head start for garden plants

One of the best ways to use an indoor grow space is to start your garden vegetable plants early.

The growing season is in full swing after the last potential frost, which around here is in April.  We’ve even had frosty mornings in May.

So starting your seeds indoors can buy you extra time and allow your plants to get going while the weather is still too cold to plant outdoors.

This is especially important for slow growing vegetables like peppers.
